A school rooted in its coastal community
Here at Langer Primary Academy we are proud to be a Beach School, offering children a rich and purposeful learning experience that makes the very most of our unique coastal location.
As part of our Beach School programme, every class takes part in a six-week block, spending one afternoon each week learning at the beach. These sessions are carefully planned and fully supervised, combining essential beach safety education with exciting, hands-on learning that supports children’s confidence, wellbeing and personal development.
What is a Beach School?
Beach School is an outdoor learning approach, similar to Forest School, but set within a coastal environment. The beach becomes a natural classroom where children learn through exploration, discussion and real-life experience. Sessions are child-centred, engaging and structured, helping pupils develop independence, resilience and curiosity while remaining safe and supported at all times.
Why Beach School matters for children growing up by the coast
For families that live by the sea, Beach School is not just an enrichment activity – it is a vital part of children’s education.
Children in coastal communities naturally spend time at the beach outside of school. Beach School ensure that they:
- Understand tides, waves and changing weather conditions
- Learn how to identify risks and stay safe near the sea
- Develop respect for the power of the ocean
- Build confidence and knowledge that supports safer choices throughout life
Learning these skills in a structured, education environment helps children become responsible, informed and confident members of a coastal community.
What will your child experience?
Alongside essential safety learning, children will:
- Explore marine life and coastal habits
- Learn about caring for and protecting the environment
- Take part in teamwork and problem-solving activities
- Build resilience, confidence and communication skills
- Enjoy creative, hands-on learning that enhances classroom studies
The benefits for your child
Beach School offers long-lasting benefits including:
- Improved wellbeing through regular outdoor learning
- Increased confidence and independence
- Stronger connection to their local environment
- High levels of engagement and enjoyment
- Real-life skills that support safety, responsibility and resilience
Our commitment
Being a Beach School reflects our commitment to educating the whole child. Our programme equips pupils with the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in their local community.
Beach School FAQS
Yes. Safety is our top priority. All sessions are carefully risk-assessed and led by trained staff. Children are taught clear boundaries, beach safety rulers and how to manage risks appropriately, with close supervision.
Activities are planned according to tide times, weather conditions and age group. Clear boundaries are set, and safety learning forms a key part of every session.
Children will need appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather, including sturdy footwear. Specific guidance will be shared with parents in advance of sessions.
Beach School takes place in most weather conditions, as this is part of learning about the coastal environment. However, sessions may be adapted or postponed if conditions are unsafe.
Beach School supports the curriculum by developing key skills such as communication, teamwork, problem‑solving and resilience. Learning outdoors also boosts confidence, engagement and wellbeing, which positively impacts classroom learning.
We believe all children benefit from outdoor learning and coastal safety education. By ensuring each class takes part, every child gains the skills and understanding they need to live safely and confidently by the sea.
